Wheeled vs Crawler Excavators

Purchasing an excavator is a BIG decision so understanding the difference between two of the most common excavators can make all the difference in the process. Consideration of the strengths and weaknesses of both and evaluating the types of jobs that you do or will be doing in the future will determine which will be best for you.

Wheeled Excavators are best used on hard and flat surfaces so if you are often working in muddy or hilly terrain, it will not be the best option. They are also quite fast and easy to maneuver on hard surfaces such as concrete.

The Crawler Excavators (also known as standard excavators) move via tracks as opposed to wheels which makes them excellent for uneven, steep and soft terrain. They are also considerably slower than a wheeled excavators, though.

Knowing these differences along with the knowledge of future projects should make deciding on which excavator you will need much easier.
