What is Siberian Larch Cladding?

Siberian larch cladding is generally sourced from sawmill firms who process larch logs from well-managed forests in northern Europe. The high resin content found in Siberian larch makes it one of the most durable softwoods in the world, so it’s incredibly useful for construction purposes, such as cladding.

Before we get into the advantages of Siberian larch, it’s important to understand that when cladding a building, you want a material that’s relatively light, yet durable and fit to face severe British weather, especially in the winter months. But with cladding often providing the finishing touches to a building, it needs t be aesthetically pleasing too, and not every wood has a great deal of character that can give a building the ‘wow factor’. With Siberian larch, you can enjoy the following benefits:

Stability

The tightness of the growth rings and the high proportion of late wood enables a smoother machine finish and enhanced dimensional stability, which is a must for timber cladding. Siberian Larch is without a doubt one of the most beautiful woods you’ll likely see, but it’s also a favourite for its stability, with so many different construction firms relying on it for cladding.

Density

Density is incredibly important in cladding and this wood certainly delivers. Due to its high percentage of heartwood (75-90%) and a minimum of sapwood, you’re guaranteed a very dense timber that is ideal for highly exposed elevations, or applications where there is the likelihood of physical damage such as knocks or scrapes (e.g. schools, shopping centres, public walkways).

Fixings

It’s a very simply wood to work with and you don’t require any special fixings at all.

Sustainability

In most cases, this wood is sourced from well-managed forests, so you can invest in this wood knowing the Siberian Larch you buy is carefully managed, with new trees being planted regularly.

Price

Okay so this wood doesn’t exactly come cheap, however, for the quality and consistency that you’re guaranteed, it’s very cost effective, and it’s certainly a building material you’ll never regret buying, just ask roofers and cladding contractors!

So to summarise, you get all of the following:

·
Clean and contemporary look

·
Suitable for most types of cladding application

·
Excellent density and durability

·
Stringent in-house grading of every board

·
Sustainable

Siberian larch has been used for building projects for hundreds of years and we’re looking forward to seeing new architectural styles incorporating this wood now and in the near future. We hope this article offered you further information on this wonderful wood, and hopefully you can now understand some of the reasons many construction firms use this wood for cladding, not just in the UK, but across Europe.
