The Uses Of Overflow and Non-Overflow Dams

There are two primary types of dams used in construction, overflow dams and non-overflow. Each design has different features and are used depending on the type of site and the purpose for which the dam is built for.

Overflow dams are used when the power of the water needs to be harnessed. They are fitted with several systems that allow for water flow and water levels to be regulated, including sluice gates, spillways and outlet tunnels. They used to improve navigation, provide irrigation and produce power.

Non-overflow dams are more limited in their design, and are rarely fitted with outlet structures to channel water. They are sometimes fitted with pumping systems for irrigation purposes. They are primarily used for water supply reservoirs and irrigation use. Non-overflow dams are built with a spillway, but its use is restricted for emergencies to lower the water level quickly during floods.
